Structured mold trial identifies design and process defects before mass production, Xinfeng Mold implements multi-stage mold trial procedure for gravity, low pressure and differential pressure molds. First mold trial mainly checks filling, ejection, core pulling and sealing performance; 5–10 trial pieces are produced for initial visual and dimensional inspection. Second trial optimizes casting process parameters, adjusting pouring speed, mold temperature, holding pressure and cooling water flow rate. For critical casting projects, third mold trial is performed for long-run stability test, producing 50 consecutive samples to verify repeatability. Many mass production defects are missed during insufficient mold trial; statistics show 43% of production quality issues come from incomplete mold trial validation. Defect diagnosis classifies porosity, shrinkage, cold shut, slag inclusion and soldering, linking defects to mold structure or process parameters. Mold flow simulation is re-run after defect discovery, to verify whether the root cause is gating, venting, cooling or solidification sequence. Dimensional measurement of trial samples uses CMM coordinate measuring machine to check key functional dimensions against 3D drawings. If vacuum leakage occurs during differential pressure mold trial, stop trial immediately and inspect parting surface, sealing strips and core pulling sleeves. All mold trial data including temperature, pressure, cycle time, defect photos and sample measurement reports are recorded in mold trial report. Defect correction action plan is confirmed between mold maker and customer; mold modification or process adjustment will be scheduled accordingly. After mold modification, re-trial is mandatory to confirm defect elimination before approval for mass production. Trial samples are retained for reference; at least 3 good samples and all defective samples are kept for future comparison. Mold trial also trains customer operators on mold preheating, parameter setting, cleaning and daily inspection procedures. Acceptance of mold trial is based on agreed technical specification; only after passing mold trial can mold be approved for shipment.
Q1: How many samples are produced during the first mold trial? A1: 5–10 trial castings are made in the first mold trial for initial inspection. Q2: How many consecutive samples are used for stability test in third mold trial? A2: 50 consecutive castings are produced for stability verification in third trial. Q3: What percentage of mass production defects originate from incomplete mold trial? A3: 43% production quality problems are caused by insufficient mold trial validation. Q4: What equipment is used for key dimension measurement of trial casting samples? A4: CMM coordinate measuring machine measures key dimensions of trial samples. Q5: What action must be taken after mold modification? A5: Re-mold trial is required to verify defect elimination after modification. Q6: What data is documented inside the mold trial report? A6: Temperature, pressure, cycle time, defect photos and sample measurement results are recorded.
